At Flitwick Lower assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. It ensures that all members of staff know a child’s strengths and areas for development as well are monitoring their attainment and progress against National Age Related Expectations. Assessments are shared with parents at key dates throughout the year but also available when requested by parents.
Early Years Foundation Profile
Every child’s progress is closely monitored at Flitwick Lower School in order that we can provide the best possible learning opportunities and support for your child. Before your child starts school, staff work with you and the preschool staff to build up an accurate picture of their strengths. Children continue to be assessed in the reception class where staff will add information to an assessment profile for each individual. Insights will be shared at parent consultation meetings. Your child will have a learning journey comprising of photos and comments which will be available during the year for you to add to.
Year One phonic check
All children in Year 1 will participate in a phonics check. This assessment will be administered by an adult known to the child, normally the class teacher. Results are included within the Year 1 end of term report.
Children in Year 2 are assessed during the spring and summer terms .The results of these assessments are reported annually to the parents by the governing body. Optional materials may be used in classes 3 and to assist teacher assessment of pupil progress. The national expectation is that children should aim to achieve Level 2 at the end of Year 2 and Level 4 at the end of Year 6.
Marking and assessment
We aim to provide feedback to children through marking so that they have specific advice about improvements to their work. Children are given time to read and review their work following marking. Children are encouraged to draw a smiley / sad face when they have finished their work to show their level of understanding and to add a comment if possible.
Parents are very welcome in school and we aim to involve them with their children’s education as much as possible. Parent consultation evenings take place in the autumn and spring terms. In addition to this if you wish to meet with the class teacher please arrange an appointment after school. Please call at the office or telephone for an appointment.
Reports to parents
At the end of each year your child will bring home a full report detailing progress and achievements across the curriculum. The report will be based on self assessment by your child and summative observations by the teaching team. Parents / Carers are encouraged to provide feedback to the school.
